The New Osteonecrosis of the Jaws

Bisphosphonate & Rank-L Inhibitors – Practical Patient Management

La Concha Renaissance Hotel
San Juan, Puerto Rico

Presented by Robert E. Marx, DDS

From its first textbook identification in 2002 and its first journal publication in 2003, what was called Bisphosphate Induced Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (BIONJ) is now called Drug Induced Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (DIONJ) and has not gone away. In fact, cases are on the increase. The same commercial bisphosphonate drugs and the two commercial denosumab drugs, continue to cause ONJ and have added a further uncertainty related to prevention, management, and resolution directed treatments.

This course will focus on prevention, palliative management when appropriate, and definitive treatment protocols related to each drug. It will also address the appropriate co-management with the osteoporosis prescribing physician and the medical oncologist as well as informed consent guidelines. It is Dr. Robert Marx’s intent that each of you will leave this course with a better understanding of why, how and what should be done for these patients including dental implants as well as what should not be done. This course will provide a comprehensive handout and a full disc of all images for your home study.

Exposed necrotic bone in the jaws continues to be a reality presenting itself to every dentist and dental specialty.

Conference details, hotel and registration information are coming soon.

A SELF-ASSESSMENT EDUCATIONAL TOOL

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Its Treatment

Robert E. Marx, DDS, and Diane Stern, DDS

Case-based learning is an effective and stimulating method to increase your knowledge base and prepare for examinations. This volume, “Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Its Treatment,” features 100 questions derived from actual cases that will test and improve your knowledge in oral and maxillofacial pathology and its treatment. The questions in this series cover topics that span the entire spectrum of oral and maxillofacial pathology, including oral cancer, odontogenic cysts and tumors, fibro-osseous diseases, salivary gland pathologies, and much more. Each item in the test is formatted as a brief description, often accompanied by a clinical photograph, radiograph, computed tomography scan, and/or laboratory value, followed by a succinct question. In most cases, the question is followed by four multiple-choice answers, of which only one is correct. A unique feature of the program is that it not only gives the correct answer, but each answer concludes with a comprehensive discussion of why it is correct and why the other options can be ruled out. Both the answers and these explanations are located in a separate file so that the test can be used both as an actual examination and as an educational tool. Also included are several “matching” questions that challenge the reader to coordinate and compare clinical, radiographic, and histopathology findings.

This test is designed for practitioners and students who wish to increase their knowledge, improve their clinical practice, and/or prepare for board examinations.
